You would NEVER rape anybody. An Open Letter to the Democratic Party of Virginia
flowerpotrhinos: Dear Charniele Herring and the Democratic Party of Virginia, Before I begin, I want to say that this letter comes out of over two year’s worth of frustration and disappointment. You see, I used to be an intern at the DPVA. I enjoyed my time there, the people, and the experience. I am grateful and I learned a lot about the inner-workings of state-level politics. I held my tongue...

The risk of death associated with abortion increases with the length of pregnancy, from one death for every one million abortions at or before eight weeks to one per 29,000 at 16-20 weeks - and one per 11,000 at 21 or more weeks. This is so, SO important to understand and educate people about. Because passing restrictions on abortion - making it harder to get an abortion - means that more...

BIAS: It's not just a catch word.
There’s this talk being held today, “Must women lead differently than men?” and I wanna talk a little about how this title frames the discussion and enforces status quo. This title establishes “male” styles of leadership (I use the quotes because I don’t believe there is an innate “male” way of leading. I think anything we ascribe to “male...

When we get that instinct to say “geez, I’m sorry, I didn’t mean it that way at all,” it’s time to stop right now. It doesn’t matter how you meant it. It really doesn’t. Someone doesn’t have to have racism in their heart to do something racist. And...

Here’s my explanation as to why this is the non-profit by answering your questions. Why...
I love that when my 3.5yo wants to be tickled he says, “Tickle me mama! But when I say “purple” you stop.” And that’s how we play. He picks the word that we’ll use for “stop” and when he says it, I stop. And when he tickles me and I say it, he stops. He asks me to touch him, “Tickle me!” and I respect it when he asks me to stop,...

If people don’t see it, it’s because they don’t want to. Like racism, homophobia, and every other bias that exists, it’s uncomfortable for people to be forced to examine the role they play in supporting sexist systems of oppression. So they say, “Oh, it’s not happening. If it was I would see it. Because I’m a smart person.” Must be super comfy in...

5 Ways We Can Teach Men Not To Rape →
I am raising a son. You can damn well believe that he is being taught, at his current pre-school age, some of these tools. He’s being taught to ask his friends if they want hugs from him, and he’s being taught to respect it when they tell him, “No.” When he gets older he will hear his father and I critically examine sports announcers on our television. He will attend...

“Reproductive health is not reproductive rights. And reproductive rights is not reproductive justice. And that’s okay.” In fact, she [Shark Fu] argued, we need all three, we just need to recognize the difference between them and not conflate them. Planned Parenthood does reproductive health and they have a lobbying arm that does reproductive rights. But PP is not reproductive justice. That’s...

Virginia is uniquely discriminatory because the power to restore voting rights lies solely with the Governor. Otherwise, former felons are disenfranchised for life, a rule that disproportionally affects African Americans, leaving 20 percent of the state’s voting age blacks barred from voting. I was just thinking about this - in light of my posts earlier about Kathleen Hanna. alittleheadache: “Somehow, the editors miss numerous chances to discuss non-Anglo punk scenes even when they’re staring them right in the face. #InterGenFem + YOU = Join In!
Intergenerational feminism. Does it exist? Can we do a better job? Why does working together across differences (generation is just one of many, including race, class, gender, sexuality, ability) matter for the cultural and political goals feminists are looking to achieve?
These conversations keep happening, and the idea for this TweetChat grew out of a great conversation that happened spontaneously on Twitter between @AndreaPlaid, @erintothemax, @ShelbyKnox, @StephHerold, @veronicaeye and @WentRogue. Along the way we picked up @GloriaFeldt and now we're hoping to pick up YOU (yes, YOU are enthusiastically invited!) to join us for a broader conversation that is intended to be productive, solutions-oriented and totally helpful to your personal and professional endeavors to realize justice in this lifetime.
Some of the themes to discuss:
1. "Young feminism" - what does it mean?
2. Organizational feminism - what is and isn't connecting with different age groups?
3. How does race and racial privilege intersect with intergenerational issues in the movement?
4. What is the unfinished business of feminism?
5. What does sharing power look like?
6. What can we all do to better support each other?
Is there more that needs to be discussed? Good. That's another reason for you to join, so you can bring it up.
TweetChat is Thursday, Jan. 31. Use the hashtag #InterGenFem. Be there 2-3 p.m. and tell your friends.

wrightallison: I teach “Sports, Media & Society” to undergraduates at one of the best public universities in the nation. My students are exceedingly bright and engaged. Thinking about Dr. Tiller
Three years ago today, I was 6 months pregnant sitting on the couch with the windows open. My husband was in the kitchen doing dishes from the brunch that we’d just finished eating. I had my laptop open on my lap, and said, “Holy shit,” as I reached for the TV remote. “What?” my husband asked as he peered into the living room. “Fucking anti-choice zealots just fucking assassinated Tiller,” I...
